Steelers Wide Receivers Coach Darryl Drake Dies

PITTSBURGH (GSM) – The Steelers released an official statement from team president Art Rooney II and head coach Mike Tomlin about the passing of the team’s wide receivers coach Darryl Drake. He died at age 62. No cause of death has been announced at this time.

Statement from Rooney on Darryl Drake

We are at a loss for words following Darryl Drake’s passing this morning. Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career. He was a passionate coach and had a tremendous spirit toward life, his family, his faith and the game of football.

Our prayers and thoughts are with his wife, Sheila, his three daughters, his grandchildren and entire family during this difficult time.

Statement from Tomlin on Darryl Drake

Darryl was a close friend and had a tremendous impact on my coaching career. He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather, and it is difficult to put into words the grief our entire team is going through right now.

Darryl loved the game of football and every player he ever coached. We will use our faith to guide us and help his family throughout the difficult time.

My heart and our prayers are with his wife, Sheila, and Darryl’s entire family.

Tomlin Addresses Media After Family Fest at Heinz Field

PITTSBURGH (GSM) — Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, heading into his 13th season, says it was important to, “give the young guys situational work” at Family Day in Heinz Field. Rookies such as Devin Bush (LB, Michigan) and Diontae Johnson (WR, Toledo) received significant reps during the evening’s practice. Johnson left practice with a hip injury. His condition is to be determined in the coming days.

LATROBE (GSM) – Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin insists that Donte Moncrief become a leader on his team during training camp. The veteran wide receiver was drafted in 2014 by the Indianapolis Colts.

Steelers Extend Tomlin’s Contract

PITTSBURGH (GSM) — The Steelers announced Head Coach Mike Tomlin will stay around a while. At least for one more year.

Since 2007, Tomlin has been in his position. Prior to coming to the Steelers, he was a defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy.

“Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship.” – Steelers owner Art Rooney II

Tomlin’s record as head coach is 131–71–1 (.648) including the post-season with a 1-1 Super Bowl record. The Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 and were defeated by the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV 31-25.
